The SCADA Integrator Due-Diligence Checklist

A SCADA project sits at the center of your operation. It is how your people see the plant, how alarms reach the right person, and increasingly how data flows to your MES and analytics. A weak integrator does not just deliver a clunky interface — they leave you with an unmaintainable tag database, a security hole, and no documentation to hand the next engineer. Choosing well is worth real diligence. This checklist is what to verify before you sign, whether the integrator is down the road or across a border.

1. Platform depth on your specific stack

SCADA is not one thing. Ignition, Wonderware / AVEVA, FactoryTalk View, WinCC, and Zenon are different worlds. Ask which platform the integrator has actually shipped production systems on — not trained on, shipped. Then go deeper:

  • How do they structure tags and templates? (A good answer involves reusable UDTs / templates, not thousands of hand-built tags.)
  • How do they handle historian configuration and data retention?
  • Have they done redundancy and failover on your platform, if you need it?

Vague, brand-name answers are a red flag. Specific answers about architecture are a green flag.

2. Architecture and scalability

A SCADA system that works for 500 tags can collapse at 50,000 if it was built naively. Ask the integrator to describe the architecture they propose: client/server topology, how many clients, thin-client versus thick, edge versus central historian, and how the design accommodates growth. If they cannot sketch this on a whiteboard (or a shared doc) in fifteen minutes, they have not thought about your scale.

3. Cybersecurity posture

This is the section most often skipped and most often regretted. A SCADA integrator in 2026 must treat security as a first-class deliverable, not an afterthought. Verify:

  • Network segmentation between the control network and IT / the internet.
  • No default passwords, and a real user-role model with least privilege.
  • Secure remote access (VPN or a managed gateway), never an open port.
  • A patching and backup story for the SCADA servers.

If the integrator's plan is to put an HMI on the office network with a default login "so you can check it from home," walk away.

4. Documentation and handover

The difference between a maintainable system and a hostage situation is documentation. Require, in writing, that the deliverable includes: an as-built architecture diagram, a tag/naming-convention document, an alarm rationalization list, and a backup/restore procedure. Ask to see a sample documentation package from a past project. An integrator who documents well is telling you they expect you to be able to maintain the system without them — which is exactly the integrator you want.

5. References and verified skill

Ask for two or three references on the same platform and industry, and actually call them. Ask the references one blunt question: "Would you hire them again, and what went wrong?" Every project has something that went wrong; an honest reference will tell you, and the answer reveals how the integrator handles problems.

The integrator who says "here is how I would architect it, here is the security model, here is the documentation you will get, and here is a reference who will tell you what went wrong" is worth more than a lower bid with vague reassurances.
