Why We Put Our 15% Platform Fee Out in the Open

Ask a staffing agency or an enterprise talent platform what it costs to bring on an industrial automation engineer, and you almost never get a number. What you get is a "contact sales" button, a demo booking form, and a quote a few weeks later with markup you can't see. In an industry built on verifiable engineering, pricing is somehow the least transparent part of the page.

We built it the other way on purpose. Talengineer charges 15% on every released milestone, engineers keep 85% of every payment, and founding clients pay just 5% on their first 5 orders. That's the entire model, published on a public page: talengineer.us/pricing.

This piece explains exactly where that fee goes — and why publishing it matters more than the number itself.

What the 15% actually pays for

Whether a platform fee is worth it comes down to what it replaces — cash, time, or risk you'd otherwise be carrying yourself. Our 15% maps to five concrete things:

1. Escrow and payment rails. Every milestone is funded into escrow before work starts and released only after approval; cross-border payouts run through compliant channels. If you've ever wired a prepayment to an overseas engineer on trust alone, you know exactly what that's worth.

2. The certification pipeline. Engineers on the platform aren't a self-reported résumé — onboarding starts with a practical, hands-on AI technical screening, and above that sits a platform certification exam: four tracks, three levels, timed, randomized question banks, AI-scored with human review before a certificate is issued. And only certified engineers can be assigned to a project. Running that pipeline costs real money — but it's what gives "certified" any weight.

3. Matching that reads the spec. Your request is parsed into a structured scope of work, and candidates are ranked by verified skills, certification level, region, and delivery record — not by who bids fastest.

4. Dispute handling with an evidence trail. GPS check-ins, on-site photo QC, and milestone records mean that if something goes wrong, there's a record to review — an admin resolves it against the evidence, and escrowed funds can be refunded to the employer when a dispute isn't resolved in the engineer's favor. Nobody pays for work that didn't happen.

5. Cross-language collaboration. Project chat runs real-time translation across 9 languages. For a plant manager in China working with an engineer in Mexico, that's not a nice-to-have — it's the difference between a project happening and not.

Why not race the rate to zero?

Some platforms advertise "0% commission." Read the fine print and the margin hasn't disappeared — it's just moved somewhere you can't see it: an hourly markup, an FX spread, paid placement, a subscription wall. The money doesn't go away; it just gets hidden.

We'd rather charge a fee you can see, and tie it to exactly one event: a milestone you've approved. Posting a project is free. Getting matched is free. Engineers applying is free. We only make money when work you're satisfied with actually gets paid. That keeps the platform's incentive pointed at the one thing that matters: delivery.

Why founding clients pay just 5%

To be direct about it: we're in the validation stage, and we're effectively buying our first proven track record. The 5% rate on your first 5 orders exists because a real case study — a real industry, a real delivery record — is worth more to us right now than a few extra points of margin. There are only 5 spots at that rate, and once they're gone, they're gone.

What we never charge for

Posting a project, getting matched, engineers applying to join, browsing engineer profiles, and the rate benchmarks — the rate data is public for exactly the same reason the fee is.

Opacity is a tax on trust, and trust is the scarcest thing in cross-border engineering work. We'd rather compete on what can actually be verified.
