Hire a SCADA Engineer

Ignition, WinCC, FactoryTalk View SE and AVEVA specialists for supervisory control, historians and OPC UA integration — verified and escrow-protected.

What this role delivers

A SCADA engineer builds the supervisory layer above the machines: the tag database and its naming discipline, operator screens at plant scale, alarm philosophy and rationalization, trending, historian and reporting infrastructure, and the OPC UA and driver connectivity that ties dozens of PLCs into one coherent picture. Done well, it is how a plant actually sees itself; done badly, it is a wall of nuisance alarms nobody trusts.

One thing we state plainly: TalEngineer runs four certification tracks — PLC & Controls, Robotics, Machine Vision and Electrical — and SCADA work is scored and certified within the PLC & Controls track rather than as a separate certificate. That reflects how the work actually connects: supervisory systems stand on controls fundamentals. What you filter on in practice is the platform itself, because an Ignition house and a WinCC house are different toolchains.

Indicative blended hourly-rate ranges by region, aligned with our live /rates benchmarks. Development work sits toward the middle of each range; on-site commissioning carries a premium. Platform escrow fee is 15% (5% for founding customers).

Certification path

Every engineer passes a practical AI technical screener before they can be matched at all. Beyond that, they can earn certification in this track at three sequential levels — each higher level requires holding the one below it. Exams mix auto-graded multiple-choice with AI-scored scenario and analysis questions; results are reviewed by a platform admin before any certificate is issued, failed attempts carry a cooldown before retake, and only certified engineers can be assigned to your project.

A note on SCADA: TalEngineer runs four certification tracks — PLC & Controls, Robotics, Machine Vision and Electrical. There is no separate SCADA certificate; SCADA engineers are screened and certified within the PLC & Controls track, where supervisory work technically belongs.

L1 — Fundamentals

Solid fundamentals — executes well-specified ladder/ST work under some guidance.

L2 — Independent

Owns a scope end to end, makes sound design decisions, delivers with minimal oversight.

L3 — Expert

Architects control systems, handles difficult commissioning and safety, leads technically.

How hiring works

1
Post your project

Scope the work and break it into milestones — our AI intake helps structure the brief before any engineer sees it.

2
Match with certified engineers

You are matched with pre-screened engineers certified in this track — filter by platform depth and certification level.

3
Fund milestone escrow

Funds for each milestone are held in escrow before work starts — the engineer knows the budget is real; you keep control of release.

4
Accept and release

Review each milestone deliverable and release payment on acceptance. If something is contested, a defined evidence-based dispute path protects both sides.

Frequently asked questions

What does a SCADA engineer build?

The plant-level supervisory system: tag structure and naming standards, HMI/SCADA screens beyond single-machine scope, alarm management, historian configuration, trending and reports, user and security models, and connectivity — OPC UA, drivers and gateways — to the underlying PLCs and devices. Scopes range from greenfield SCADA builds to migrations between platforms and historian or alarm-rationalization projects.

Which SCADA platforms do engineers on TalEngineer cover?

The major industrial platforms: Inductive Automation Ignition, Siemens WinCC, Rockwell FactoryTalk View SE and AVEVA (Wonderware) System Platform / InTouch, plus historian products and OPC UA connectivity. Platform fluency matters as much as it does for PLC brands, so you filter by the specific platform your plant runs.

Is there a dedicated SCADA certification track?

No — and we would rather say so than imply one exists. The platform currently certifies four tracks (PLC & Controls, Robotics, Machine Vision, Electrical), and SCADA engineers are scored and certified under PLC & Controls, where supervisory work technically belongs. The practical AI screening and the project history on an engineer profile are where SCADA-specific depth shows.

How much SCADA work can be done remotely?

More than most automation work: screen development, tag and alarm engineering, historian configuration and reporting are naturally remote-friendly once secure access is in place. Site presence concentrates around connectivity to live equipment, cutovers and acceptance. A common structure is remote development milestones followed by an on-site cutover milestone, all escrow-protected.
